Top 5 Winter Activities in Regina You Must Try

Best Cross Country Ski Trails in Saskatchewan

It’s easier to get through our long winters in Regina (and Saskatchewan), as a whole, if you choose to embrace it. One of the best ways is to take advantage of all the fun outdoor snow activities you can participate in.

I promise this will help you forget all about the cold in Regina in winter.

What is Regina like in Winter?

There’s no sugar coating it – Regina in winter can be cold. Like extremely cold. Down to -50 degrees Celsius some days. Some years, there is a lot of snow. Other years, the snow falls and melts and falls and melts.

In a good winter, there will be several feet of snow. This is ideal. This means there are more opportunities to take advantage of all the fun winter activities that come along with the snow.

As long as you’re dressed for it (here’s a guide to dressing in Saskatchewan if you’d like some tips), it can be a lot of fun getting outside.

5 Activities to Enjoy During Winter in Regina

Here are five activities and five great locations in Regina to venture out into the winter weather – so get ready to have snow much fun.

1. Downhill Tobogganing at Mount Pleasant Sports Park

Downhill tobogganing is an outdoor activity that is fun for everyone. This isn’t just a kid’s activity!

Ride a traditional wooden sled or grab a colourful crazy carpet or disc to slide down the hills in the city. Mount Pleasant in the north end of Regina offers some of the best sledding in the city. It’s fast, fun and just plain awesome.

    2. Snowshoeing at White Butte Trails Recreation Site

When we get piles of snow, there’s no point battling the deep drifts when you can strap on a pair of snowshoes to stride across it all.

Only 20 minutes east of Regina are the White Butte Trails. They are perfect for snowshoeing and also a great workout. There are 5 kilometres of dedicated snowshoe trails marked with signs that have snowshoes on them. Please note there are also 13 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails as well as fatbiking, walking, and dog-friendly trails. Be mindful to only use the designated trails for the activity you are doing.

Facilities on site include two parking lots, an outdoor toilet and two warm-up shelters.

    3. Ice Skating in Victoria Park

The City of Regina maintains more than 50 outdoor ice rinks and 8 shinny spots at 41 different sites so it’s easy to get out and enjoy them. But with so many options, it can be hard to decide where to go.

For those who don’t own skates, the outdoor rink downtown in Victoria Park has free skates to borrow. There’s also an on-site warm-up shack. For a full listing of outdoor rinks in the city and their ice status, click here.

Rinks are available pending appropriate weather and are always first-come-first-served.

    4. Cross Country Skiing at the Wascana Centre Trails

There are nearly 10 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails around the Wascana Centre in multiple locations. These are maintained by the Regina Ski Club.

There is a 2.7 km novice trail in Douglas Park, two short trails near the Science Centre and a 3 km advanced and intermediate trail in the Foothills. For those who don’t own skis, both Fresh Air Experience and Sunshine and Ski offer affordable rentals.

    5. Fat Biking the Trails in Les Sherman and Wascana Parks

The fat biking scene is exploding in Regina. A fat bike is an off-road bicycle that has thick, oversized tires. This is a modification that allows enthusiasts to ride on softer and more unstable terrain (re: snowy trails).

Thanks to the efforts of the Regina Multisport Club, Regina Cycle Club and the Regina Ski Club, they’ve come up with a shared agreement to use some of the skate ski trails in the city so fat bikers can ride on the groomed surface. Check out the trails in Les Sherman and Wascana Park to get your ride on.
